Who knew there was so much variability to assessing students progress and work. Learning about assessment helped me picture how to incorporate the different types of assessment into all of my lesson plans. Throughout the first semester, I heard terms such as formative and summative, but never really knew what they meant or why we use them. But after this lesson it is way more clear. I really liked the slide that compared formative and summative assessment. Formative is when the chef tastes the soup and summative is when the guests taste the soup. This was such a simple way to remember what each type of assessment mean. And then we determined what the meaning of assessment of learning was for. It is assessments used to determine how much students have learned at a particular point in time in order to report achievement status to others which is usually summative. Assessment for learning is designed to give teachers information to adjust and differentiate teaching and learning activities, usually formative. Considering assessment is one of the most important task teachers will endure, it is excellent to finally know the differences between the different types of assessment and when to use each type.
